Lighthouse presents a place-specific light installation from Erik Mátrai in the Hangvilla Studio Room this time. The light installation entitled Parallel segments consists of two rows of special lamps arranged in a corridor. The lamps project a vertical, flat light into the space in which artificial smoke billows. Where the planes of light intersect the smoke, a section of it is shown, creating a long corridor of light and smoke in the exhibition space, which is constantly swirling and changing.

“The human eye is attracted to light, but not to the blinding one, it is more conducive to clairvoyance. In Erik Mátrai’s work, the framed swirling forms invite the viewer to give them meaning, just as if we were looking at clouds in the sky. However, the work allows the viewer much more than that. Although it is allowed to sit in a chair and watch the smoke change from the air movement, as if dripping ink into water – the installation could also be treated as a meditative process as well. As the meanings become unstable, the ego slowly collapses, and the viewer becomes, so to speak, unnoticed, becoming mere attention in change without any fixation. There are no explanations and no reasons, only a clear present tense. “ written by Ákos Béres in his article entitled Cleaning fogging on f21.hu.

The installation is supported by the City of Debrecen
